There are many stories behind Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Third Gender and Intersex (LGBTI) in Hinduism. Hindu society and culture perceive LGBTIs as good luck. For example, a newly born child or newly married couple in Hindu society gets blessed by LGBTIs that are believed to be an incarnation of god.

Despite the existence of LGBTIs in the society, the identity and issues of LGBTI came forward officially only since 2001 in Nepal. Since 2006, Nepal is a secular state where LGBTI community represents diverse culture and religion.

Interestingly, LGBTI people in Nepal have been successful to establish their identity and issues in private and public sphere and law, policies, plans and programmes within short period of time. Although the economic and social status of LGBTI is yet to be better, Nepal has been the most active country in South Asia towards the identity and issues of LGBTIs. It has taken a number of steps to address the issues of LGBTIs. The National Youth Policy, 2010 of Ministry of Youth and Sports in Nepal defined “youths as women, men and third genders of 16-40 age group”. By recognizing the identity of third genders, Nepal’s census-2011 included third genders in its survey form. The Supreme Court of Nepal through its verdict in 2007 introduced gender identity of third gender people as natural and urged the government to issue citizenship certificate to them as per their preferred gender identity. In addition, the 2008-2009 budgets of the government allocated some fund to ‘tesrolingi or ‘third sex’. The Three-Year National Human Rights Action Plan (2010-2013) of the government included some programmes and budget for them. The Election Commission for the first time recognized third genders in its new voters’ list in 1013.

The recent development made to protect the rights of LGBTIs in Nepal are welcoming signal to LGBTI tourism in the country. Few gay and lesbian couples from abroad have chosen Nepal for their wedding and honeymoon in the past. There are many interesting places in Nepal where LGBTI people without any problem could tour, trek and explore adventure activities, including rafting, bunjy jumping and paragliding. LGBTI people from diverse cultural background can freely enjoy their holiday in Nepal. The Federal Alliance said it would gherao the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Tuesday.

According to Mahesh Chaurasiya, an aide of the Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal, Chairman Upendra Yadav, the gherao would begin at 10 am tomorrow.

The Alliance has hoped that the Baluwatar gherao programme would be more effective to put pressure on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli for fulfilling the bloc’s demands, according to statement issued by Chaurasiya this afternoon.

Earlier, the Alliance had picketed Singha Darbar on Sunday and Monday. It concluded that the programme was a grand success

The comedian duo of Sitaram Kattel (Dhurmus) and Kunjana Ghimire (Suntali) of the weekly sitcom Meri Bassai were in the US in the middle of a two-and-a-half month tour when the Great Earthquake rattled Nepal on April 25. One week after the quake, the duo—who are also the Sanitation Brand Ambassadors for the Nepal government—were back in Nepal. They had to cancel the remaining scheduled 18 shows, which were meant to raise money for sanitation programmes back home. Since they have been back, they have focused solely on carrying out relief work. The husband and wife have successfully rebuilt Pahari Basti, Danda Gaun, ward no 16, in Kavrepalanchok district, with the help of locals and volunteers by making earthquake-resistant houses for an Integrated Model Village. It was when he was a little boy of about eight that Wilson Bikram Rai had gotten his first taste of the world of cinema, having been given a small role in the Rajesh Hamal-starrer Saathi when the film was shot in his hometown of Jhapa. And it was a world he couldn’t detach from. Taken with the idea of becoming an actor, Rai had run away to Kathmandu at the age of 12, hoping to find a way into the industry. Of course, things weren’t that easy, and he was compelled to return home soon after, but he was far from giving up hope. With a great deal of hard work and determination in the years after, he finally found success. Today, his character Takme Buda in the TV series Meri Bassai, and his roles in films like Saayad and Producer, have made him a household name of sorts and attested to his talents as an actor. Rajita Dhungana caught up with Rai to chat about his life, travels and hobbies. Excerpts:

What are you up to these days?

I’m presently shooting for a new movie called Adhakatti. I’ve also recently wrapped up work on another film, Killa. Other than that, two projects—My Promise and Sakash—are both ready, and should be released sometime soon. I’m also preparing for a stand-up show to take place in Qatar, and once that’s over and done with, there’s another show in the UK as well. So it’s a fairly busy time for me, but I’m not one to complain.

What about when you’re not working? What do you like to do?

I enjoy staying occupied. So when I’m not working, I often end up feeling guilty about wasting time. But, of course, I find ways to engage myself productively somehow. I’m passionate about cooking, so I do that every now and then. Usually, I’ll invite friends over to taste what I’ve made. I enjoy that, cooking for people, although I don’t know if they always like my cooking or not. I have gotten rave reviews for my sukuti, though, so at least I have a crowd-pleaser in my pocket.

You’re fond of cooking, but what about eating? What are your favourite dishes?

The dishes I like most are all sourced from traditional Nepali cuisine, comprising elements that are spicy. Earlier, when I had just started going out, I was very experimental, eating and tasting anything I could. I found a lot of things that I absolutely relished, but I wasn’t a big fan of Chinese sweet dishes and Turkish lamb kebab—even though they certainly look delicious, they’re a bit too intensely sweet for me. But now I’ve returned to my roots. If I could, I’d eat rice and tarkari for breakfast, dinner and lunch, every single day.

Your work involves a lot of traveling. Do you have any places that you’ve loved more than others?

Yes, I’ve certainly been around, and I’m always overwhelmed by how many people attend my shows, so each place is special in that way. I go to the UK, Japan, Australia and Hong Kong almost every year, and out of these, Hong Kong and Japan are my favourites. People are so welcoming there, and they really feel like home. Besides, I could very easily pass off as one of the locals in these places, which makes it easier to blend in.

Has anything memorable happened in the course of your travels that you’d like to share with us?

While traveling to Israel from the UK a few years back, I’d had a transit stopover in Turkey. When I came out, I saw one of the airport’s staff members standing, holding a board with my name on it, and I was asked to follow him. They ushered me into a vehicle, and drove me to a grand hotel, where I was given a very nice room. It was only later on that I realised they were giving me the VIP treatment because I’d applied for an entertainer’s visa. The hotel I was staying at was where all big celebrities were taken to, and I actually saw a few ‘stars’ from the Middle East and the UK there. People kept asking me repeatedly whether I was Korean or Chinese—Gangnam Style was very popular at the time, so they might have mistaken me for someone else. It was a great 11 hours of feeling like royalty, although I was so dazzled I couldn’t really get any sleep.

If not an actor, what do you think you would have become today?

I’d probably have gone mad. No, really, acting has been the only thing I’ve thought of doing since I was a child. I was infected early on by the ‘filmonia virus’ and I couldn’t even consider doing anything else. There was so much inspiration all around me—acting greats like Neer Shah, Hari Bansha Acharya and Dilip Rayamajhi—each of whom taught me something or the other. And I see myself directing at some future point, after I’ve gained enough experience and expertise. I don’t even want to think about what I’d have become if I hadn’t found this.

You have fans all around the world…have there ever been any funny fan-related incidents?

I was performing in London this one time, and I’d come onstage as Takme Buda. After my bit was done, I went off and came back as Takme Buda’s grandson. But when the show came to an end, an old lady actually came up to me and inquired after my grandfather, asking me to take care of him. It was both sweet and funny that she thought the characters were real.

Do you have any regrets at all?

See, I’d always dreamt of becoming an actor, and I’m living that dream right now. I have fans who’ve shown me so much love and respect, and I’m absolutely crazy about my job. So no, no regrets. So long as life treats me as kindly as it has so far, I really couldn’t want anything different

The Russian military has launched cruise missiles against Islamic State positions in Syria from both the Mediterranean and Caspian seas, one of which killed over 600 terrorists in the Deir Ex-Zor Province, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has said.

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) have been suffering huge losses as a result of the Russian offensive, Shoigu said, adding that data on the ground shows that the flow of terrorists arriving in Syria has decreased, while more and more militants are fleeing the warzone to head north and south-west.
Over the past four days, Russian air forces have conducted 522 sorties, deploying more than 100 cruise missiles and 1,400 tons of bombs of various types, the minister stated.
He added that a strike on a target in Deir ez-Zor utilizing multiple cruise missiles had killed more than 600 militants.Shoigu stressed that the number of aircraft taking part in the operation has been doubled, and now consists of 69 jets conducting 143 sorties on a daily basis.
The minister pointed out that Russia is focused on destroying the terrorists’ economic base, having targeted 15 oil storage and refinery facilities as well as 525 oil trucks.
Russia has also destroyed 23 jihadists training camps, 19 plants producing explosives, 47 ammunition depots, as well as many other targets, according to the minister.
In addition, Russia’s air campaign has provided significant support for Syrian government troops near Aleppo, Idlib, Latakia and Palmyra, he noted.
He also added that the Russian military has begun cooperating with its French counterparts, as ordered by President Putin.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the agitating Madhesi parties came to the Capital as they failed to garner support from the people of Tarai.Speaking at a programme organised by his party CPN-UML here Monday to mark the 23rd Madan-Ashrit Memorial Day, the Prime Minister said people’s mandate and rule of law are always recognised and respected in a democratic system, and urged the disgruntled parties, who have objected to some provisions in the recently promulgated constitution, to get their voice addressed from the same way.Demand for rewriting of the constitution promulgated by a vast majority 92 per cent of the people’s elected Constituent Assembly could never be justified and this Legislature-Parliament did not have such authority too, the Prime Minister said.Room for amendment to the constitution, however, was always open to address the genuine demands of the dissatisfying parties, he added. Prime Minister Oli, who is also the chairman of CPN-UML, further called on the agitating parties not to cause any inconvenience to the people in their bid to get their demands fulfilled.“Rule of law dominates in a democracy and let’s stop vandalism and violent activities. Guaranteed vs. Non-Guaranteed Permanent Life Insurance Policies
Fifty years ago, most life insurance policies sold were guaranteed and offered by mutual fund companies. Choices were limited to term, endowment or whole life policies. It was simple, you paid a high, set premium and the insurance company guaranteed the death benefit. All of that changed in the 1980s. Interest rates soared, and policy owners surrendered their coverage to invest the cash value in higher interest paying non-insurance products. To compete, insurers began offering interest-sensitive non-guaranteed policies.

Guaranteed versus Non-Guaranteed Policies
Today, companies offer a broad range of guaranteed and non-guaranteed life insurance policies. A guaranteed policy is one in which the insurer assumes all the risk and contractually guarantees the death benefit in exchange for a set premium payment. If investments underperform or expenses go up, the insurer has to absorb the loss. With a non-guaranteed policy the owner, in exchange for a lower premium and possibly better return, is assuming much of the investment risk as well as giving the insurer the right to increase policy fees. If things don’t work out as planned, the policy owner has to absorb the cost and pay a higher premium.
Term Policies
Term life insurance is guaranteed. The premium is set at issue and clearly stated right in the policy. An annual renewable term policy has a premium that goes up every year. A level term policy has an initially higher premium that does not change for a set period, usually 10, 20 or 30 years, and then becomes annual renewable term with a premium based on your attained age

He comedian duo of Sitaram Kattel (Dhurmus) and Kunjana Ghimirey (Suntali) of the weekly sitcom Meri Bassai were in the US in the middle of a two-and-a-half month tour when the Great Earthquake rattled Nepal on April 25. One week after the quake, the duo—who are also the Sanitation Brand Ambassadors for the Nepal government—were back in Nepal.

They had to cancel the remaining scheduled 18 shows, which were meant to raise money for sanitation programmes back home. Since they have been back, they have focused solely on carrying out relief work. The husband and wife are currently focusing their efforts in Pahari Basti, Danda Gaun, ward no 16, in Kavrepalanchok district, where they are working with locals to make earthquake -resistant houses for an Integrated Model Village; they are being helped in their endeavour by 50 Nepal Army personnel. The Post’s Anup Ojha caught up with the artists to talk about their relief work. Excerpts:

How did you react to the news of the Great Earthquake?

Sitaram: It was 2:45 am when we got the news. We were sleeping when we got a phone call from my sister-in-law in Nepal. When she provided the details of the earthquake , I started worrying about my friends and family back home

While the Unified Maoists’ Party Chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ continues to allege India for plotting murders of veteran communist leader Madan Bhandari and King Birendra and his entire family, a leader of party leading the government has alleged that it were the Maoists who were behind the ghastly murder of former General Secretary of the United Marxist Leninists’ Party.

“The Maoists are involved in the murder of former General Secretary Bhandari and leader Jib Raj Ashrit”, said Jaggannath Khatiwada, the UML leader addressing a press-meet organized by Press Chautari in Gaighat of Udaypur, January 27, 2010.

Khatiwada is a central memebr of the party.

“Why did they (Maoist) kill Amar Lama?” asked Khatiwada.

Khatiwada also said that in a bid to destroy the proof of Bhandari’s murder Maoists had also killed Amar Lama.

Bhandari and Ashrit died in a mysterious car crash in 1993 (Jestha 3, 2050 B.S) at Dasdhunga of Chitwan District. Among the three passengers in the vehicle only driver Amar Lama had survived. After ten years Lama was also killed by unidentified killers.

Prachanda in his fresh mass speeches has been alleging India for carrying out murders of Communist stalwart Mr. Madan Bhandari and Nepal’s late monarch Birendra Bir Bikram Shah.
He has claimed that the main reason behind the killing of the two adored figures had been their unequivocal love for their motherland. “They were both strong nationalists”, Prachanda has been saying.

As the protest staged by Sanghiya Gathabandha, an alliance of Madhesi and Janajati parties, enters third day in the Capital on Monday, the cadres affiliated to the alliance have beaten up two students accusing them of being vigilantes.Prakash Adhikari and Ram Prasad Poudel, both from Argakhanchi district, were attacked and seriously injured. Poudel has sustained severe eye injury while his friend Adhikari received beatings. Poudel was taken to Annapurna Neuro Hospital for immediate treatment from where he was referred to Tilganga Hospital for having severe eye damage.

Despite only having two legs, this determined goat has taught herself how to walk around and play with her friends.

Footage released shows the cute black kid balancing on her two front legs and running around with the other animals, stunning her breeder and other villagers.According to reports, the goat was born in Yunnan’s Xinping Yi-Dai Autonomous County on December 20, 2015.

She was born without any hind legs however has taught herself to walk.

In the footage, the animal can be seen walking around on her two legs, almost looking like she is balancing.

She also can be seen eating fresh food while still standing, later joined by other goat friends.

The Federal Alliance on Monday accused the government of having a crackdown on its cadres who were taking part in the Kathmandu-centric protests which began on Sunday.

Issuing a press statement today, the FA spokesperson Parashu Ram Tamang said police personnel stopped “thousands of leaders and cadres” heading to join the movement for seven to eight hours at midways, interrogated them with unnecessary questions, seized flags and banners and frisked them unnecessarily.

The statement added that the police activities violated their basic right to movement.

“If any untoward incident takes place while suppressing our peaceful and nonviolent protests,” the Alliance warned, “We would like to inform that this racist government will be held responsible

A clash occurred between police and protesters at Maitighar Mandala on the second day of the Singha Durbar-centric protest by Federal Alliance on Monday. Two protesters were injured after police resorted to baton charge as the demonstrators tried to cross the restricted zone. They have been taken to hospital for treatment

Hundreds of cadres and leaders associated with constituents of the Federal Alliance today picketed outside Singha Durbar, bringing traffic to a grinding halt.

The protesters, who shouted slogans in favour of identity-based federalism and inclusive constitution, blocked the entrance to the south gate of Singha Durbar mainly from Hanumanthan and Maitighar area.

Constituents of the Federal Alliance carried flags of their parties besides placards with slogans.

Co-chair of Sadbhawana Party Laxman Lal Karna said the alliance would continue to picket outside Singha Durbar till their demands were met but it would take a formal decision to this effect tomorrow evening.

He said the government prevented dozens of buses carrying United Democratic Madhesi Front cadres from Tarai districts from entering the capital today on various pretexts.

“The government is trying to weaken our protest by preventing our cadres and sympathisers from converging on Kathmandu,” he said and added that people from Madhes and hills were coming to the capital.

How do you find the Nepali lok-dohori scene?

The Nepali lok-dohori scene is improving gradually, but it’s difficult to make a living by selling albums alone. There is so much piracy going around. So, we (folk artistes) mostly release one or two songs at a time. If they are liked by the audience, we are invited for stage performances. That’s the only way to survive in the industry. It all depends on how many musical programmes one gets.

What kinds of music do you listen to?

I mostly like to listen to lok-dohori. Raju Pariyar and Bishnu Majhi are two of my favourite singers. I also listen to hindi music sometimes.

A high-level meeting of major political parties today failed to forge consensus on the disputed issues of Parliamentary Regulations as the ruling and the opposition parties stuck to their old stances on the strength of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee.

Nepali Congress Chief Whip Chin Kaji Shrestha said his party rejected the ruling parties’ proposal that a 15-member PHC be formed.

Shrestha said NC’s stance was that the provision of the new constitution would be applicable only when the Upper House was formed and as there was no Upper House at present, the PHC should have 73 members as was the case under the Interim Constitution. “This is a transitional period and all other committees are functioning as per the old regulations, so the PHC should also be formed accordingly,” Shrestha said, adding that his party leaders told the meeting if it was urgent to conduct parliamentary hearing, then they should agree on reviving the old PHC. Shrestha said his party leaders told the meeting that under the present system, it was necessary for the PHC to have more members to reflect the size of the 601-member Parliament and to ensure representation of all parties in Parliament. “The spirit of the constitution is to ensure representation of all the parties and communities in the PHC,” Shrestha added
