Birgunj is a metropolitan municipality and border town in Parsa District in the Narayani Zone of southern Nepal. At least 15 people have been killed and around fifty injured after an under-construction flyover collapsed in North Kolkata near Ganesh Talkies (Girish Park), Thursday afternoon. Several are still trapped under the debris. The location of the bridge is in a densely populated locality in BarraBazar. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the flyover collapse site after cancelling a political rally for the upcoming state Assembly polls.Rescue operations are currently under-way and eye-witnesses at the site feared at least a 100 people could be trapped under debris. Nepali Folk Musical Instruments and Cultural Group will be held until November 29 at the Rastriya Nachghar in Jamal in the Capital.Inaugurating the festival, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ananda Prasad Pokharel stressed the need on part of the local communities to take the initiative for preservation of the folk cultures rather than waiting for the state to do so.The Museum of Nepalese Folk Musical Instruments Chairman Ram Prasad Kandel said during the festival the experiences on works pertaining to research and conservation of national traditional folk culture would be exchanged. International experts on folk music including Nepal will also present their documents.

A total of 35 selected documentaries from 18 different countries will be screened in the three-day festival which will be held from 10 am to 5 pm on a daily basis. After the arrest of a Nepali national in possession of 54 kilogram of methamphetamine in Brisbane in January, Nepal Police said its Narcotics Control Bureau recently rounded up three persons in Kathmandu in connection with the smuggling of synthetic drug to Australia from China. One Bhupendra Tamang, who held Nepali passport, was arrested along with Australian national Raymond John Marsden from Brisbane. The Australian Federal Police had arrested them when they went to collect a consignment sent from Guangzhou of China via sea route.Those arrested in Kathmandu have been identified as Manish Shrestha of Batase, Sindhupalchok district; Bikram Lamichhane of Tripureshwar, Dhading district and Hom Bahadur Tamang of Dansingh, Nuwakot district. They were paraded in Kathmandu today. Following an investigation, the Australian security agency had alerted Nepal Police about the involvement of other Nepali nationals in the multi-million dollar smuggling, according to the NCB. The trio were presented before the Kathmandu District Court and remanded in custody for further investigation, the NCB said. According to the NCB, Tamang and Marsden had told the Australian police Manish Shrestha and Bikram Lamichhane were among others who sent the consignment concealed in materials meant for interior decoration. Following correspondence from the Australian police, Nepal Police arrested the duo on March 20 and grilled them. Based on their statements, Hom Bahadur Tamang, was also taken in custody

Frustrated by commuters’ misbehaviour during confrontations, Nepal Traffic Police have started using GoPro camera strapped around their body to record such incidents. Traffic police stationed at New Road, Thapathali, Baneshwor, Durbarmarg and Singha Durbar have started carrying such cameras while on duty from Tuesday. The cameras will be used for recording conversations between drivers during accidents and when they talk to traffic police while being stopped for licence check or violation of traffic rules. The video recorded by the camera can be used for settling cases pertaining to traffic rule violation. It can record audio from a distance of five metres and is useful for identifying the guilty party. There have also been complaints from several quarters regarding harsh behaviours of traffic police. The recording devices will them understand the sensitivity while dealing with the public.DIG Prakash Aryal of Traffic Police said, “The drive has been launched to make traffic police more accountable for their actions. I have to say that I wasn’t too sure about this Apple Kuchen when I started putting it together. I did not doubt that it would be tasty…I mean, apples and custard inside a sweet crust….yeah, that’s good, obvi. This sounded like it would be the high-rise cousin to the low-rise Alsatian Apple Tart. It’s just that I did not get off to a very good start making it.
The crust was easy enough to make and roll out, but let me tell you that getting a soft, delicate crust pressed neatly into a tall springform pan is a pain in the you-know-what. It was frustrating enough that the dough cracked into like a 1,000 pieces, but while I was pressing them back together into something crudely resembling a crust, the clasp on said springform decided to pop and now will not stay closed (actually, now it’s in the recycle bin). Ugh. I needed to go with it at that point, so I put a tight rubber band around the pan to hold it closed, dusted cookie crumbs on the bottom, piled it full of apples and chucked it in the oven to par bake. Not my most brilliant idea, aswithin a few minutes, the rubber band popped in the heat and the buckle opened up again, cracking the crust. I scrambled around and found a small pie pan that was big enough to hold the springform but tight enough to keep the buckle in the closed position. The dough was still soft at that point and seemed to come back together when the pan was re-closed, but with all those apples in there, I really couldn’t tell what condition it was in

Upon his arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport this afternoon, the Prime Minister said the 10-point agreement signed between two nations including the trade and transit treaty was a significant achievement of the nation. “This treaty has ensured Nepal’s right to access sea as a landlocked nation and the right to transit freedom through the Chinese land.” He added that he held significant dialogues with Chinese leaders and officials regarding collecting Chinese support for development of physical infrastructures in Nepal. “Both sides have agreed to expand land and air connectively and improve infrastructures of land transport,” he addedDuring his visit to China, Nepal and China had sealed 10 separate agreements and Memorandums of Understanding on using the northern neighbour’s sea port facility, building a regional international airport in Pokhara and exploring the possibilities of signing a bilateral free trade agreement and finding oil and gas reserves in Nepal among others. Prime Minister Oli had called on Chinese President Xi Jinping. During the meeting, they had discussed matters relating to mutual interests and bilateral cooperation. The high-tech pollution control measure was taken as per an agreement with the locals who had been complaining about the pollution being caused by the factory. As per the deal, the company had agreed to bring such machinery by mid-October 2014.

According to Jagadamba, the Japanese-made equipment has been installed at a cost of Rs 200 million. Locals had been complaining that the gas produced by the factory was causing them health problems.

The factory had also received complaints that the gas was affecting the flight of aircraft passing over Simara.

“The new machine will address these concerns,” said Pawan Gupta, director of the factory. The locals who had lodged a protest against the industry have also called off their agitation. “The modern plant will control 70 percent of the pollution,” said Gupta. “We will complete the remaining 10 percent of the task and resume production at the factory.”

The newly-installed equipment will collect the gas produced by the factory and stop dust particles and black gas from circulating outside and release only pure air into the atmosphere.

Kishore Tripathi, coordinator of the Jagadamba Steel Pollution Prevention Struggle Committee, said that the installation of the new plant had reduced the health risks of the general people. Likewise, airport staff said that the machine would make aircraft take-offs and landings easier.

“The gas produced by the factory used to make the sky dark,” said the official. “We are hopeful that the situation will change once the machine comes into operation

The election committee of Nepal Bar Association has said that it has completed all necessary preparations for electing new leadership of the umbrella organization of the lawyers across the country. Lawyers are scheduled to cast vote on April 2 to elect new leadership in the NBA. The election committee led by senior advocate Hari Shankar Niraula on Thursday organized a press conference and informed that the lawyers will cast their votes from 33 election booths across the country. According to Niraula, 9,522 lawyers will cast their votes to elect 19 office bearers of the NBA. There are 5,862 lawyers within the Kathmandu Valley while 3,660 lawyers are casting votes from outside the Valley. Niraula informed that 71 lawyers have filed their candidacy for the 19 positions.Sher Bahadur KC has filed his candidacy for the position of NBA chairman from the democratic panel while Bijay Kanta Mainali is the candidate for the post from the progressive and leftist panel. Police have arrested two foreigners with liquid cocaine. According to police, this is the first seizure of liquid cocaine in Nepal.After the arrest of a Nepali national in possession of 54 kilogram of methamphetamine in Brisbane in January, Nepal Police said its Narcotics Control Bureau recently rounded up three persons in Kathmandu in connection with the smuggling of synthetic drug to Australia from China.Police seized three shampoo bottles containing more than 1 kg of cocaine from Pathuni, while they seized a bottle containing about 700 gm of cocaine from Mirsi.

The 62m-high tower Dharahara tower collapsed to its foundations in the 2015 earthquake, killing 180 people, many sightseers who were admiring the views when the earthquake struck. Dharahara tower was built in 1832 by Mukhtiyar (equivalent to Prime Minister) Bhimsen Thapa under the commission of Queen Lalit Tripura Sundari and was a part of the architecture of Kathmandu recognized by UNESCO. The first tower was built eight years earlier in 1824 and was 11 stories high, two stories taller than the Dharahara. Dharahara is said to be built for Queen Lalit Tripura Sundari, who was the niece of Bhimsen Thapa. During the earthquake of 1834, both towers survived, but the first Bhimsen's tower suffered severe damage. A century later, on 15 January 1934, another earthquake completely destroyed the first tower, and only two of the 11 stories of the second tower remained. The then Prime Minister of Nepal, Juddha Shumsher, subsequently carried out renovation work of the Dharahara tower to fully restore it. After the original Bhimsen Tower was destroyed, Queen Lalit Tripura Sundari's tower became known as 'Bhimsen Stambha' or 'Bhimsen Tower'

Nepal U-23 footballers Anjan Bista and Ananta Tamang headed to the Netherlands on Saturday to join the Spanish club Marbella United FC.Bista and Tamang will be with the Marbella United in their Europe tour starting from March 13- 30.
